〜Lingering summer heat　残暑見舞い〜

Because of this terrible lingering heat, I haven’t even worked on writing late-summer greeting cards and sending them out.  However, now I am thinking that it is precisely because of this heat, it might be a good idea to begin tackling it now.

This is the solar term for the five days starting today, meaning that there will be thick fog.  It certainly feels a little cooler in the early mornings lately, but I haven’t seen anything as romantic as deep fog.

〜I love this kind of ginger very much.　茗荷もあります〜

My friend’s garden has a wide variety of vegetables and flowers.  It even has seedlings of mioga ginger, which I love so much.

〜Antiquarian Book Fair　毎年恒例の行事〜

My late father who was such a bookworm loved this annual event of the Antiquarian Book Fair.  It is held in the grounds of the neighborhood shrine in summer.

〜Part of the offerings　鬼灯の謎〜

Among the various offerings at the family altar for the Bon Festival, Chinese lantern fruits are included.  I have heard the reason is that they work as lanterns to show the way home for the spirits of the deceased.  So, I put a lot of Chinese lantern fruits at my entrance and at the family altar during the Bon Festival period right after my mother left, for she had a terrible sense of direction.

お盆のお供えの中には鬼灯がありますが、これは死者の魂がこの世に還ってくるための提灯の役割を果たすからだと聞きましたので、母が亡くなった直後のお盆には、玄関とお仏壇に鬼灯をどっさり飾りました。亡母は大変な方向音痴でしたので。

〜Solar term　寒蝉鳴〜

This is the solar term allocated to five days starting today, meaning “cry of evening cicadas”.  Although this is a kind of cicada, its cries sound a little sad.  When we get to hear it in the evening, I feel somewhat relieved, thinking that this long summer will finally come to an end soon.  I guess that is the reason it has that name, evening cicada.
