〜Solar terms　おとといは梅で、今日は桃〜

The day before yesterday, I wrote about my visit to a plum tree bonsai exhibition.  And it happened to be this phrase, “peach blossoms begin to smile or bloom” is the seasonal wordage for five days from today.  The usage of the letter 笑, smile or laugh can mean flowers’ opening or blooming is definitely my favorite way of using this letter.

桃始笑。

おとといは盆梅展を見学したことを書きましたが、たまたま今日から5日間の七十二候の名称は、桃が咲き始めるというものです。笑うという字が、花が咲くという意味に使われるのはこの漢字の私の大好きな用法です。

〜Poor flowers　水仙、復活〜

Daffodils used to make my late mother very happy at this time year.  However, heavy snowfalls some time ago severely damaged these flowers.  Now I am happy to see the flowers making comeback little by little.

〜Indoor exhibition of bonsai　高貴な薫り〜

Yesterday I was on a bus tour organized by the association of senior citizens of the community and visited a famous indoor exhibition of bonsai, or miniature potted plants of plum trees.  I remember I went there with my mother long time ago and that the day was really cold.  While, yesterday was a warm spring day.

The phrase means auspicious chi or life energy fulfills plum blossoms.

昨日は地域の老人会主催のバスツアーに参加して、有名な盆梅展を見学して来ました。随分と昔に母と行ったことがありましたが、その日はとても寒かったと覚えています。昨日はとても暖かな春の日でした。

これは、めでたい気が梅花に満ちているという意。

〜Pink lilies　虚栄心〜

Apparently, pink or red colored lilies’ flower language is “vanity”.  This is, I am sure, a rare case.  For, a big majority of flower languages are positive, bright words and a negative sounding word like this is seldom found.  They say it is due to the confident taste of the flower’s figure.  Nevertheless, being confident is a pretty favorable attitude, is it not?

ピンクまたは赤の百合の花言葉は虚栄心だそうです。花言葉にはポシティブな明るい語が多いのに、こういうネガティブな言葉は珍しいと思います。圧倒的に自信のありそうな風情からそのような花言葉がついたそうです。

でも、自信があるというのはいいことですよね。

〜One more gift of a chocolate box　友情という宝物〜

A longtime friend of mine gave me a box of chocolate with such pleasing flavors, which mean just like jewels to me.

She showed me how she looked after her mother and to me she gave me a lot of encouragement while taking care of my mother.

This treasure, I am certain, should be called friendship.

Thus, here is “reverend treasure”.

I found yellow freesias swaying at a flower shop really nice.  Thus, here are the Chinese expression (literally, “Western daffodil”), the flower language (ingenuousness) and a modern haiku about the flower.

I am very worried about members of a family whose beloved dog passed away recently.  For a very long time, they dearly loved and looked after their pet.

According to the Buddhist observance, I think today falls on her seventh day memorial service.

Some people in Kyoto still observe seasonal events following the old calendar.  However, these days, as the country on the whole is getting more and more standardized, for many people especially for the girls, today March 3rd is a particularly exciting date.
