〜Daytime nap　暑いです〜

According to the solar terms system, today falls on xiǎoshǔ.  Thus, I chose an old Chinese poem and a contemporary haiku on this theme:  the Chinese poem depicts gardens covered with moss after shower, where there is no one and the poet has just woken up from a long nap, in the haiku, the poet has just woken up from a nap and found himself/herself on the earth as always.

In other words, “daytime nap” is a charming tradition of the summer season.

今日は小暑に当たるとのことで、これをテーマにした漢詩と現代俳句を書きました：漢詩の方は、雨上がりの苔で青々とした庭には誰もいなくて詩人は長い昼寝から覚め、俳句の方の詩人は、昼寝から覚めて自分がやはり地球上にいることが分かったという。

つまり、お昼寝は夏の風物詩だということです。

〜Close to an end　芒種も半ば過ぎて〜

According to the solar terms system, the term called Mangzhong that started more than ten days ago is now close to an end.  Here is a passage from an ancient poem about the Mangzhong, which roughly means:  In a waterfront land, after the Mangzhong period wind and rain feel chilly in the season of matured apricots.

This is a symbolic phrase for these several days, that is, a little shorter than a week and starting yesterday.  It is the season for “Japanese apricot fruits turn beautiful yellow”.

〜Strawberry moon  6月の満月〜

Tonight, there will be the full moon of this month, which is called “strawberry moon” according to the Native Americans’ tradition.

For a period of time, it was wrongly believed in Japan that the reason for this name is the moon around this time often looks reddish.  However, its origin is strawberries are harvested in this season.  I wonder when people began to think December is the strawberries’ season.

Another interesting thing is April’s “pink moon” doesn’t indicate a color, but it is a collective word for pink flowers such as moss phloxes and dianthuses.

今夜は満月で、ネイティブアメリカンの風習の満月の名前としては、「苺月」。

一時期、これはこの時期の月が赤っぽい色をしているからだという誤解が日本で広まったことがあったようですが、実際には、イチゴはもともとこの時期に収穫されるからです。いつからイチゴの旬は12月だということになったのかしらと思うのです。

4月の「ピンクムーン」は、桃色という色の名前ではなくて、芝桜や撫子などのピンク色のお花の総称らしいというのも面白いものです。

〜Seasonal wording　腐草為蛍〜

This is a seasonal phrase for this time of year, which expresses a scene that an imaginal firefly wafts up into the air out of what looked like decayed grass.

Come to think of it, talking about fireflies is now a popular chatting subject among my neighbors.

Small letters show a passage from a very old children’s song of fireflies.

〜Ninth solar term  芒種〜

Fifteen days period starting today is called Mangzhong, the ninth solar term out of the twenty-four.  And so, here is a contemporary haiku with the season word of Mangzhong.  However, what I hoped to do was to use this hanger for a small size thick paper for calligraphy that I had half-forgotten but had found after several years.

Seen in the air/

〜Solar term and a haiku　紅花〜

I chose a solar term for five days starting today, “紅花栄”, or safflowers bloom in profusion for my calligraphic work.  Interestingly enough, “紅花” or literally “scarlet flower” is the name of my important friend.  I haven’t had a chance to meet her for a long time unfortunately, though.

How I wish her life be full of good luck and every success in her business!

Here, I also wrote a modern haiku about the flower.

〜Contemporary haiku and an ancient Chinese poem　初夏の頃〜

We have already been in the season of Xiaoman for about four days now.  Thus, I wrote a modern haiku and a passage from an old Chinese poem about this time of year.

And like the haiku mentions, a few of my good friends’ birthdays come this season.

〜Overjoyed but a little mystified  飾っていただきました〜

Responding to my request for a letter or a word, someone, an excellent tarot reader, gave a hiragana, one character from the Japanese phonetic alphabet system, “ま”, namely the initial letter of her name.

To my extreme happiness, she liked this calligraphy of mine and offered to buy it.  It is now displayed in her salon.

Now I feel I am on top of the world to see a pretty lady bought my calligraphy that I myself think to be a good one.

Here is one more really intriguing thing.  I used a brush of swan feathers for this one.  Then later, I learned this lady is connected with swans probably at “soul level”, that is.

そうしたら、この書を気に入ってお買い上げくださり、サロンに飾ってくださいました。綺麗な方のところに、自分でも綺麗に書けたかなと思う字が貰われていって、とても幸せです。

更にもう一点、不思議だと思ったのは、これは白鳥の羽根の筆で書きましたが、この方は「白鳥」とご縁が深いそうです。恐らく、魂のレベルにおいて。

〜Name for the May full moon　今度はお花いろいろ〜

According to the Native Americans’ tradition of giving a name to each month’s full moon, the name for the April full moon is Pink Moon, because the time is early spring when many pink flowers highlight fields and hills.

Then for the May full moon that is coming tomorrow, the name is simply the“flower moon” because the time is for various flowers blooming in profusion.

I love this Chinese character expressing “flower” in any style.

各月の満月に名前が付いているというネイティブアメリカンの伝統では、4月の満月は春先のピンク色のお花を表す「ピンクムーン」でした。

明日の5月の満月はいろいろのお花が咲き乱れる時期なので、そのものズバリの「花の月」だそうです。

「花」という字が好きです。どの書体でも。
