〜Copying practice of classics　何よりも大事〜

My friend who is an artist of Japanese style paintings says that in the painting society, copying nature is essential.  As a calligrapher, I am very well aware that nothing is more important than copying practice of the classics.  However, it is really difficult for me to make myself fully concentrate on  that.  So, I used big-size paper for a change, but I ended up being a little tired.

日本画家である友人によると、絵画の世界では写生が重要なのだそうです。書においては、臨書が何より大事だとはよく分かっているのですが、なかなかしっかりと向き合うことが出来ません。気分転換に全紙に書いてみましたが、少々疲れただけでした。

〜Once upon a time…　石臼の秘密〜

My good friend who owns a flowering garden sent me many photos of flowers, including this photo of an unused grindstone.  My calligraphy here is a fairy tale that I remembered from this photo.  As is often the case with this kind of story, two figures—one a good, honest man and the other a bad, greedy man—appear.  Here, they are two brothers.  Roughly, the story is about why the seawater became salty.

花盛りのお庭の主である友人からたくさんのお花の写真をもらいましたが、その中にこの使われていない石臼の画像もありました。そこで、ふと思い出した昔話を書きました。そういう話によくあるように、正直でいい人と強欲で悪い人が出てきます。ここでは二人の兄弟です。そして粗筋は、海の水が塩辛くなった経緯です。

〜Delightful souvenir　清涼感〜

A visitor came with a cute-packaged lovely sushi.  I learned “sushi” is a season word of summer in haiku society.  Its pleasant cooling sensation is excellent during the hot season, for sure.

These roses were a delightful gift from a garden of a friend who is a keen gardener.  I hear having more than two roses bloom simultaneously is next to impossible.

I went to see the exhibition of Japanese-style paintings, where a work by my friend was displayed.  Her work was impressive, as always, both in terms of the picture itself and her sensibility in choosing the material.
