My late mother always asked me what kind of rice balls I would like for the lunch box on special days such as a school excursion day. And every time I answered, “I would like fig-shaped rice balls!”. Then she would answer, “I won’t make those because it is troublesome”. And then, every time, I said to myself, “She shouldn’t have asked me that question at all because she must certainly know that I would surely answer I would like figgy rice balls”.
And on the next morning, she never failed to cook my favorite rice balls.
I would like to add here for her due credit that her rice balls looked much nicer and tastier. I just have no idea how she used to cook them.

遠足など特別の日のお弁当のおにぎりには何がいい？ と亡母は必ず聞いてくれました。そして私は必ず「無花果のおにぎりがいい」と答え、その度に母は「あれは面倒やからアカン」と言い、私は「だったら聞かなければいいのに。私が絶対に無花果のおにぎりがいいと言うことは分かっているくせに」と思ったものでした。
それで、結局、明くる朝には母は必ず無花果のおにぎりを作ってくれていました。
母の名誉のために書きますが、もっとずっと形が良くて美味しそうなおにぎりを作ってくれましたが、どうやって作っていたのかまるで分からないのです。

In the bus tour I took the other day, we were supposed to enjoy blossoms on a tree that is said to be 650 years old in the famous temple related to the Imperial Family. However, the flowers have already fallen and the tree was full of fresh green leaves.

Although yesterday was Easter, I learned, this event doesn’t seem to take hold in this country. People often say that it is simply because settling the date is difficult. A very good, longtime friend of mine took me to a very good Japanese style pub yesterday evening, saying it is too difficult for a woman to go there alone the first time. It obviously is a good place that serves tasty dishes at reasonable prices. For instance, as you can see the hors d’oeuvres on a plate, seasonal dishes cooked in the traditional way are served. However, I don’t think I can go there again if I am to go there alone.

Yesterday I wrote about delightful chocolate gift, a Western kind of sweets, from my friend. And today, this is about sakuramochi or a cherry flavored soft sweet rice cake, a Japanese kind of sweet stuff.
