〜Food to be preserved　亡母も得意でした〜

Around this time of year, I sometimes see plums dried in the gardens of houses to be umeboshi or a kind of traditional food consisting of preserved plums.  My late mother was a very good umeboshi maker who made beautiful umeboshi every year.  A funny thing about this is she never ate umeboshi because she hated tartness.

Imitating the stars in the sky/

Range and dry the plums/

To make umeboshi or pickled plums/

Half shaded earth/

I dry the plums to make into pickled plums/

〜Popular summer food　食べてね〜

As my late mother loved 素麺 or thin wheat noodles, I cooked some and offered it on the family Buddhist altar.  Its setout is so, very facile, though.

Summer clouds appear and grow limitlessly/

〜Daytime nap　暑いです〜

According to the solar terms system, today falls on xiǎoshǔ.  Thus, I chose an old Chinese poem and a contemporary haiku on this theme:  the Chinese poem depicts gardens covered with moss after shower, where there is no one and the poet has just woken up from a long nap, in the haiku, the poet has just woken up from a nap and found himself/herself on the earth as always.

In other words, “daytime nap” is a charming tradition of the summer season.

今日は小暑に当たるとのことで、これをテーマにした漢詩と現代俳句を書きました：漢詩の方は、雨上がりの苔で青々とした庭には誰もいなくて詩人は長い昼寝から覚め、俳句の方の詩人は、昼寝から覚めて自分がやはり地球上にいることが分かったという。

つまり、お昼寝は夏の風物詩だということです。

〜Double celebration  父の日でもあるけれど〜

Father’s Day and my birthday come around about the same time every year and this year they both are today.

My late mother used to cook a big meal around this time saying, “today is a double celebration of Father’s Day and Tomoko’s birthday.

Actually, on the table were only the dishes I loved.
