〜Such delightful presents　半年前にいただいていました〜

In fact, I received these chocolates about six months ago from a faraway country.  However, I have hesitated to write about them here because the sender seemed to be in a challenging time in her life, and all the news that came from the area where she lives is just so terrible.

〜Little red bird　童謡が好き〜

Some time ago, I wrote the whole poem of this children’s song.  Then, a precious friend of mine liked it very much and made a comment about it on my site.

Oh, red bird, little bird

Why, oh, why are you so red?

Because I ate red berries

The other day, when I arrived at my friend’s house very tiredly, she offered me some chocolate quite unexpectedly.  I truly felt happy and delighted.

Only one piece of chocolate makes my day.

〜Award for excellence　日本画展〜

I went to Kobe to visit a large-scale exhibition of Japanese-style paintings from the general public where a fantastic work by my long-time very good friend and awarded for excellence was displayed.

In that part of Japan, live my important relatives and a treasured friend from my college days.  Naturally, I would love to visit there more often, however, somehow in reality, I only get there once in a while.

Swans have arrived/

In the vast Harima Province/

〜Citrus sudachi　いただき物〜

See these wilding Citrus sudachis, which I got from my longtime important friend and her daughter.  I heard they went into the hills and wild-crafted the fruits.  That is why they don’t look as neat as those lined up on the stands at supermarkets.  All the more, I am certain they would taste much stronger.

野生の酢橘です。長年の大切な友人とその娘さんからいただきました。なんと山に入って穫ってきてくださいました。それで、スーパーに並んでいるような小綺麗な見た目ではないけれど、とても濃いお味がしそうです。

〜Autumn colored lift-the-flap card　紙のもみじ〜

This fantastic card came from one of my longtime friends.  So, I wrote the words of an old children’s song about autumn foliage.  The words describe the contrasting density of the leaves and how the leaves adorn the mountains and rivers.

〜Exhibition of bamboo lanterns, pt. 4　続々々・優しい灯り〜

Following my third post about the fantastic exhibition of bamboo craftworks, this is the fourth one quoting the very first part of The Tale of the Bamboo-Cutter, which is considered the oldest surviving work of a “Monogatari” or fictional narrative containing folklores.

The original story is extremely long and here is a tiny part of its beginning.

“Once upon a time, there lived an old man who cut bamboo in the fields and hills.  He crafts various things out of those bamboo.  He was called Sanuki no Miyatsuko.  One day he found a bamboo with light at the bottom part.  He approached it wondering what it was.  Then he found a light in the bamboo trunk.  He went closer to it and found a very small and adorable person sitting inside the trunk.”

This is my third post about the fantastic exhibition of bamboo craftworks.

“Flower Mind, Bamboo Capacity”

The term apparently means “flowers are attractive and fascinate people; while bamboo has flexibility since it won’t go against winds’ flows and yet it has an accommodating mind.  Bamboo seems to possess some primordial appeal to Japanese people.

「花意竹情」

花はその魅力で人々を魅了し、竹は風になびくしなやかさを持ちながら、なおも真っ直ぐな心を持っているとのこと。

竹には、何かしら日本人の根本の感情に訴えかける力があるのだと思います。

〜Name by color　赤、白、黄色〜

I often think of yellow flowers when I hear the name of the flower, “portulaca” or “rose moss”.  One of my longtime good friends kindly gave me an image of red and white flowers of that kind.  So, I searched for their flower languages and found “innocence” and “perseverance”, respectively.

松葉牡丹と言えば、黄色のお花を思い浮かべますが、赤と白のお花の画像をいただきました。

そこで、色別の花言葉を調べると、それぞれ「無邪気」と「忍耐」でした。

〜Exhibition of bamboo lanterns　優しい灯り〜

A very good friend of mine who always rushes to me and gives great help with a variety of troubles is now immensely into making bamboo crafts.  Her house is near the producing area of bamboo shoots in a vast bamboo forest.  She told me this wonderful art started with the effort to improve the forest’s condition there.

Although she still seems to belong to the beginners’ category, I found her work amazing and felt her warm feelings.

Thus, this old Chinese poem I found describes a poet playing the harp and singing in the deep forest without being noticed, with only the moon illuminating the scene.

いつもいろいろの場面で助けてくれる良い友人が、このところ竹細工作品作りに凝っておられます。彼女のお家は、古くから筍の産地で竹林が広がる辺りにあり、この素晴らしいアートは元々その辺りで行われる竹林の整備から始まったそうです。

彼女はまだ初心者と呼ばれるようですが、作者の心を感じる見事な作品だと思いました。

それで、詩人が林の奥深いところで、琴を弾じ、歌を吟じるけれども、誰にも気づかれない。月明かりだけが詩人を照らすという詩を見つけて書きました。
