Even though it is already October, it still doesn’t feel cool at all. I used a number of fans as materials for my calligraphy. My mother liked them and used them so often that they now look really worn out.

Among the various offerings at the family altar for the Bon Festival, Chinese lantern fruits are included. I have heard the reason is that they work as lanterns to show the way home for the spirits of the deceased. So, I put a lot of Chinese lantern fruits at my entrance and at the family altar during the Bon Festival period right after my mother left, for she had a terrible sense of direction.

お盆のお供えの中には鬼灯がありますが、これは死者の魂がこの世に還ってくるための提灯の役割を果たすからだと聞きましたので、母が亡くなった直後のお盆には、玄関とお仏壇に鬼灯をどっさり飾りました。亡母は大変な方向音痴でしたので。

Because my mother’s hometown was a production area of somen or thin wheat noodles, she used to like the noodles’ scraps made in the production process. I happened to find them at a supermarket where I sometimes go and bought some.

Whenever I go to my late mother’s hometown for regular visits to the grave, I find it becoming more like a big city. It was just a countryside place when I was growing up, though.
Mother’s first house doesn’t exist now, and every time I passed nearby on a bus, I couldn’t spot the place so far. This time, however, I found the place where the house used to stand.
