This haiku expresses the sign that soon, many beautiful Japanese apricot blossoms will flourish here on the tree, although you don’t actually find any at the moment. 梅の花はまだ咲いていなくても、いずれ近いうちにここにはたくさんの美しい梅花が咲き誇るという予感を詠んだ俳句で、実際にはまだ見えていないけれど、感じられるという日本人の感性が詠まれている俳句のようです。

My friend’s garden has many different kinds of plants. This is a winter sweet tree called “蝋梅” in Japanese, literally “wax plum (flower).”
It reminded me of when I was young and first learned about this kind of plant, “winter sweet”, in flower arrangement lessons—I remember thinking, “Ah, the petals really do look like what is made of wax.”
