〜Solar term　半夏生〜

Today falls on “hangesho” or 半夏生 this year, which is usually July 2nd.  The day used to be allocated on the 11th day counting from the summer solstice, but now it is decided on the day when the sun passes the point of 100 degrees of celestial longitude on the celestial sphere.

What a drag it is getting old/

7月2日になることが多い半夏生は今年は今日だそうです。また、かつては夏至から数えて11日目とされていたようですが、現在では天球上の黄経100度の点を太陽が通過する日となっているらしいです。

〜Half year　今日のおやつ〜

Because the end of June means a half-year has passed, this traditional dessert, which is half a square, symbolizes this timing.  I think this is an interesting idea. What is also interesting is the name itself, 水無月, is the old name of the month, June.

6月が終わるとちょうど半年が過ぎるから、この四角の半分のお菓子がそのシンボルだそうですが、面白い考え方だなと思います。その名も「水無月」だというのも面白い。

〜Purple rain　懐かしい殿下〜

I went to see a documentary film on a late musician that one music critic commented was “a drift of geniuses”.

Then, I searched the net with the keywords of “purple” and “rain”, and found a tanka by a well-known poet.

I don’t think this poem is connected to the musician, but I felt like writing it somehow.

ある音楽評論家が「才能の吹き溜まり」と評した今は亡きミュージシャンのドキュメンタリー映画を観てきました。

〜My favorite motif　良い雨だけがほしい〜

“Graceful rain, happy rain, quietness after the rain”

This is my favorite motif for calligraphy, which I have written several times.  I am both a “rain woman” and a pluviophile.  However, I would only want a quiet rain that would softly embrace the whole world but not a disastrously hard rain.

〜Glass of sparkling wine　これもいただき物〜

The restaurant I sometimes go to gave me a glass of sparkling wine in honor of my birth month.  My calligraphy here on a small-size paper is based on the well-known ancient Chinese poem about wine.

〜Summer solstice　何故かちょっと嬉しい〜

〜One word　効率が良い〜

The word apparently means “flower” and “bud” in one word.  I thought it was really efficient.
