〜Delightful fruits　頂き物〜

These are yuzu citrus fruits born in the garden of kind neighbors who give me the fruits every year.  They seem to give out more scent than before.

〜Rose in winter season　素敵な言葉〜

I hear 冬薔薇 or “rose in winter” is an official season word in haiku society.  I had always thought it was a lovely phrase for sure, and from time to time I actually find a typical rose to the meaning of the term that is “an obscure rose in the desolate wintry scene and not a gorgeous one grown under glass.

It still holds/

Though it is decaying/

Rose in winter/

冬薔薇は冬の季語のようで、確かに素敵な言葉だと思っていましたが、その意味付けの通りの冬のバラは本当にあるのだなと思いました。つまり、温室で育てられ立派に咲いた花ではなく、冬枯れの中にぽつりと咲き出したバラの花を見かけることがあるのです。

An old friend of mine who I met for the first time in a long time, her family and I enjoyed delightful lunch at a stylish cafe.  And in the stylish court of the building was a charming fountain.

A little while ago, my favorite radio personality for nearly fifty years talked about his meeting with a graphic designer he used to work with for the first time in fifty years.

These days I myself often remember my happy encounter with calligraphy sixty years ago.

〜Celosias  個性派〜

We often see celosias at flower shops and roadside around this time of year.  As a child, however, I was less fond of it just because of its rather individualistic shape, I thought, was a little scary.  Just as the haiku says what come after its season are wind and snow, making the plant a symbol of the end of fall.

〜Autumn scene  柔らかい陽〜

This is a contemporary haiku of fall season.  I chose it as a motif for my calligraphy because I felt I actually touched the soft sunlight of late autumn.

〜Nearby forest　松の種類〜

I can’t tell differences of pine tree varieties.  However, my late mother used to be pleased with red pine trees in the nearby Tadasu-no-mori, when we went through the woods.

〜Cats’ paws　バレンタインでもハロウィンでも〜

Actually, I did this this piece of a contemporary haiku inspired by a box of chocolates my friend sent me for the Valentine’s Day.  However, I thought the theme would fit Halloween, as well.

Somehow my late mother loved Halloween.  I am afraid she didn’t understand the meaning of the event but just loved cute, little things she found at various places.
