〜Copying practice　お手本用素材の選び方〜

I follow the clouds/

Wherever they may go.

Calligraphy and translation by Chio

Since I tend to be a little pessimistic at the moment, I’ll practice using the example my teacher left behind.

I learned this is a haiku by Takahama Kyoshi (高浜虚子), and I like that it is not just about watching the clouds in the sky, but it is about taking action himself.  Now, I have a feeling that that is why my teacher chose this as an example for his students to practice.

Well then, shall we move on to the next assignment?

天高し雲行く方に我も行く

どうしても後ろ向き気分の私は、先生が遺してくださったお手本でお稽古します。

高浜虚子の句らしいですが、空の雲を見ているだけでなくて、自分も動き出しているのが良いと思いますし、それで先生はこれを手本に選ばれたのだという気がします。

さて、次の課題に取り組みましょうか。

I have always had a hard time with this, ever since I was quite young.  When I get angry, I just can’t help but get angry.

〜Here, deep blue　ちょっと色を添える〜

I sometimes add colors to my works using colorants, and even something as simple as this surprises people who aren’t familiar with calligraphy.  They seem to believe firmly that calligraphy uses only black ink.

ときどき作品に顔料で色を添えることがありますが、こんなことでも、書作品を見ることのない人はびっくりしてくれます。そういう人は、書では墨色の墨しか使わないのだと思い込んでおられるようです。
