January 15

People have long celebrated the day, January 15 as a kind of second New Year Day, because according to the lunar calendar, it marks the first full moon after the New Year Day.

.

The well-known shrine in my neighborhood provides rice porridge cooked with azuki beans every year.

.

I got some for my mother who will turn 92 in summer, because the porridge is supposed and expected to bring good luck to the elderly.

.

I wrote “avoiding disaster”, “inviting happiness”, “health” and “longevity” for her.

Written oracle

Yesterday, coincidentally, fell on the Full Moon in the Libra, I went to the shrinewhich I visit from time to time.

And there I got a written oracle.  Its comment in the form of tanka roughly goes as follows.

Birds freed from a cage are each having fun/

Lots of fun in the fields in springtime/

Special moon

After dinner on the eve of harvest moon, I went out for a short walk with my mother on her wheel chair and was in an ill temper a little, hoping she would feel better.  As she was appreciating the huge, beautiful moon, she obviously began to feel better and peaceful.

Happy birthday!

Today marks the birthday of the wife of the couple who both have helped me with expanding my horizon as a calligrapher for many years.  I wrote the letters 祝“to cerebrate” and 延“to wish for future longevity full of happiness” in a kind of mode of the primitive characters from the ancient China.  The reason I chose this style is simply I am very interested in the origin of Chinese characters.

Invisible harvest moon

9-15

Tonight we could have seen the beautiful harvest moon. However, unfortunately it was cloudy. I made this haiku for my mother who loves to see the moon, especially the full moon.

Mother is eighty-eight/

Toward the harvest moon/

Is cloudy sky/

Something gets fulfilled never to return. For a kind of person who is always poor at letting things go, how much will I be able to shed will be the top issue.

There are people I already quit getting in touch with.

I will proceed to a different world.

What total lunar eclipse is—light and shadow

4.5

Last night, I didn’t try to see the eclipse because of the thick clouds. I wonder if people in Kyoto managed to see it.

I read somewhere that lunar eclipse means seeing your own shadow projected on the moon. The shadow must be so big and deep was what came into my mind.

I wrote this passage inspired by Ms. Yukari Ishii’s (in Japanese) comment, which roughly goes:

Indication of personally accumulated efforts be wonderfully opening up to the outer world.

“Ravage and regeneration” is said to be the word. Moreover, it will even be more beneficial if you let go what you have kept on firmly clutching, I heard. As I have repeatedly written here, I am helpless when it comes to discarding something.
