〜Seasonal wordage　菜虫化蝶〜

This is the seasonal wording for about five days with today the middle day, which means a caterpillar becomes a butterfly.  I do think it gives out a beautiful, springlike image, however, I don’t think a butterfly comes out from a caterpillar.  It is from a chrysalis, I think.

〜Solar terms　おとといは梅で、今日は桃〜

The day before yesterday, I wrote about my visit to a plum tree bonsai exhibition.  And it happened to be this phrase, “peach blossoms begin to smile or bloom” is the seasonal wordage for five days from today.  The usage of the letter 笑, smile or laugh can mean flowers’ opening or blooming is definitely my favorite way of using this letter.

桃始笑。

おとといは盆梅展を見学したことを書きましたが、たまたま今日から5日間の七十二候の名称は、桃が咲き始めるというものです。笑うという字が、花が咲くという意味に使われるのはこの漢字の私の大好きな用法です。

This is the seasonal phrase for about five days till tomorrow, which means as the air is getting warmer vegetation begins budding and giving out new spirits.

Surely, I feel that kind of life force even in an old tree in my garden.

〜The second solar term　雨水と雛祭り〜

Today falls on the first day of the period of Yushui, the second solar term, when it is the time of year what falls from the sky changes from snow to rain.  And the piles of snow on the ground begin to melt.

Another old saying goes “if you begin displaying the dolls for Hinamatsri doll festival on this day, you will be blessed with good relations”.

Thus, I display my own calligraphy of a contemporary haiku about the doll festival, wishing for many good occasions to come to Chio’s calligraphy.

今日は、二十四節気の第二番目雨水と呼ばれる期間の初めの日にあたります。これは、降る雪が雨に変わり、雪解けが始まる時期とのことで、雛人形を飾り始めると良縁に恵まれるという言い伝えもあります。

それで私は雛祭りを詠んだ現代俳句を書いた自分の作品を飾ろうと思うのです。知櫻の書に良いご縁がありますように。

〜Seasonal wording　土脉潤起〜

The seasonal phrase for about five days from today is this, which they say, means it is the time of year when snow turns into soft spring rain and the earth is beginning to be moist.  The phrase inspired me to write it with plenty of ink in the brush.

〜Seasonal wordage　東と西〜

This is the seasonal words allocated for the five days starting yesterday.  “(Warm) east wind melts ice in rivers, ponds and lakes.”  Here “east wind” means “spring wind”.

Now I remember way back when as a student, I read “ODE TO THE WEST WIND” and learned the west wind here is a prelude of springtime and didn’t really understand.

昨日ぐらいから5日間の七十二候の名称です。暖かい春風が吹き、川や池、湖などの氷が解け始めるとの意味で、東風は春風と同義のようです。

思い出すのは、学生の頃「西風に寄す」を読んで、ここでは西風が春の先触れであると聞いたときに、よく分からないなと思ったことです。
