This potted Phalaenopsis orchid, which arrived as a congratulatory gift at the venue of my solo exhibition celebrating my seventieth birthday, watched all through the event from the back of the exhibition hall. Although pink Phalaenopsis orchids are often found, these yellow flowers, I thought, fit better with the name “Phalaenopsis orchid” because the Japanese word for “Phalaenopsis orchid”, 胡蝶蘭, literally means “butterfly orchid”.

お祝いとしていただいたこの鉢植えの胡蝶蘭は、古希記念の個展の会期中ずっと会場の奥から見守ってくれていました。胡蝶蘭と言えば、ピンクのものを良く見かけますが、こういう黄色いお花の方が、胡蝶蘭という名前によく合っていると思いました。
