Among the various offerings at the family altar for the Bon Festival, Chinese lantern fruits are included.  I have heard the reason is that they work as lanterns to show the way home for the spirits of the deceased.  So, I put a lot of Chinese lantern fruits at my entrance and at the family altar during the Bon Festival period right after my mother left, for she had a terrible sense of direction.

お盆のお供えの中には鬼灯がありますが、これは死者の魂がこの世に還ってくるための提灯の役割を果たすからだと聞きましたので、母が亡くなった直後のお盆には、玄関とお仏壇に鬼灯をどっさり飾りました。亡母は大変な方向音痴でしたので。
