I have learned that pebbles are laid on the approaches and grounds of shrines because the noise they make when worshippers walk purifies the scene.  However, I think, as this haiku suggests, the noise makes people feel even hotter.

Crunching sound of the pebbles/

Amplifies the heat/

神社の参道や境内に玉砂利が敷かれているのは、参拝者がそれを踏んで進んでいくときの音も辺りを清める作用があるとされるからだそうですが、この句のように余計に暑く感じるかもしれません。
