Because the leaves of fatsias form into the shape of folding fans, that is, they spread out wide toward the ends; moreover, the letter “八” in its name means the number 8, which is also considered to be lucky; this kind of plant obviously is thought to be auspicious. I never had this idea as the plant is rather somber-looking.
