Responding to my request a friend said “道 michi”, which usually means a road or a way.  However, this letter is used to express special fields of arts, as in 茶道 way of tea, 華道flower arrangement art, 書道 calligraphy and many other arts including variety of 武道martial arts, such as 柔道, judo or Japanese art of self-defense and 剣道, kendo or Japanese art of fencing.

As shown above, here are so many 道’s but they seem to have something in common, a desire for truth or perfection.

Thus, someone acquired to be really proficient in one field after having given full attention to it in life seems to sense this commonality.

お好きな字とか言葉を教えてと頼んだら、「道」と答えた友人がいました。通常、道と言えば道路の道だと考えられますが、様々な分野の追求すべき「道」もあります。茶道に華道に書道に、それから柔道や剣道といった諸々の武道。

そしてこれらの「道」には共通点があるように見受けられます。何かしらの真理に迫ろうとする精神です。

従って、これらの道のお稽古のうち何か一つの分野で秀でている人、人生においてその分野に真剣に向き合ったことのある人は、そうした全ての「道」に共通するところを理解しておられるようです。
