It just occurred to me today that I had heard quite some time ago that the image of the “dragon” differs between the West and the East.  In the East, it’s something enormous, possessing

immeasurable power, majestic and in a sense revered being.  In the West, however, it is just a threat with great power that harms humans.  Indeed, the dragons in the Harry Potter series are just terrifying monsters, aren’t they?

今日ふと思ったのですが、ずいぶん以前のこと、西洋と東洋の「龍」のイメージが異なっていると聞きました。東洋では、何かしら巨大で、計り知れない力を持っていて、荘厳で、ある意味尊い存在だけれども、西洋では、ただ大きな力で人間に危害を加える脅威だとか。なるほど、ハリーポッターシリーズに出てくるドラゴンは、とにかく恐ろしいだけのモンスターですよね。
