Many years ago, my teacher taught us, his students at his school about “intensive practice in summer”. In old times, diligent students of calligraphy had to practice even harder than usual in the hottest season. I remember thinking that I would not be happy about such hard lessons like rigorous training.

随分以前のこと、稽古場で先生が「夏書」という古い言葉を教えてくださいました。昔は、夏にこそ集中的な厳しいお稽古をしたそうです。こんなに暑いときに、そんな修行的なお稽古は嫌だなあと思ったことを覚えています。

〜Summer sky 食欲〜
It may often happen that the clouds in the sky look like something to eat. I found this idea of covering the cloud in syrup very intriguing but not just eating it.

〜Seasonal phrase 桐始結花〜
This is the seasonal phrase given to these days of end of July. If we only think of the letters, it seems to mean the empress trees begin to bloom first flowers. However, I learned this phrase means the blossoms begin to bear fruits. The flowers are known to bloom in early summer.

この7月の終わりの時期の七十二候の名称です。字だけを見ると桐のお花が咲き始めるという意味みたいですが、その花が実を結びだすという意味のようです。お花は初夏に咲くのだそうです。

It has been so very hot since early morning, and I found out today falls on Dashu (solar term), literally, great heat, which means today is the day of extreme heat according to solar term.

〜Every child has a beautiful name! 親の願い〜
When I was doing some net-surfing with no particular purposes, I found out the name of one of my French friends means “radiant ocean”, which impressed me as such a wonderful name. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find what the name of this lady’s husband means, so I wrote the impression he gives me; “gentle and properly confident”. I do hope the couple will be pleased with these gifts from me.

ふと思い立ってネットを調べていたら、知り合いのあるフランス人女性のお名前が『光り輝く海』という意味だとわかりました。いいお名前だと思います。残念ながらこの方の旦那さんのお名前の意味は分かりませんでしたので、その方の印象『健穏』を書きました。お二人がこの贈り物を喜んでくださったらいいと思います。

〜Sense of clarity 褒め言葉〜
The most delightful compliments about my appearance should be “sense of clarity”. Probably, it is just because I have always had fair skin. Still, I can’t hide a smirk on my face when hearing the phrase.

〜Extreme delight 永遠の真実〜
For the first time in a while, I practiced copying my teacher’s calligraphy. It seems the phrase means “when hearing the voice of eternal verity, my heart is filled with great pleasure”. However, there is a possibility that he intended to put more Buddhist meaning.

久しぶりに先生の書を臨書しました。永遠の真実を聞くと心が歓喜に満たされるということのようですが、先生はもっと仏教色の濃い意味として書かれたのかもしれません。

〜Friendship 文人の遊び〜
The first picture shows a painting that my important friend in Poland sent me. This painting immediately reminded me of a sort of a game played among people of culture in old times; that is, first, a painter draws anything he or she likes and then a calligrapher writes in the margin what he or she is inspired by the drawing. The second picture shows the result; first I added the calligraphy “energy of love” on the same paper, then, I added my paperer framed it into a panel.

1枚目の写真は、ポーランド在住の大事な友人から送られてきたもので、これを見たとき、昔の文人たちの遊びを思い出しました。つまり、まず画家が好きな絵を描き、書家がそこからインスピレーションを得た字を書き足すという優雅な遊びです。2枚目の写真が、私が初めの絵に「愛の波動」と書き足し、更にパネルに仕立ててもらったものです。
